Generative engine optimization gets you cited inside AI-generated answers. Search engine optimization gets you clicks from a results page. Both still matter, and the useful part of this comparison is working out which one your particular problem belongs to.

The last row is the one that changes behaviour. Classic authority still applies and you can't shortcut it, but agreement across independent sources carries weight in a way link volume alone doesn't.

What the mechanics actually are

SEO crawls and ranks pages. Position depends on relevance, links, technical health and how people interact with the result. Sitemaps, page speed and mobile rendering are still table stakes, and skipping them means quick GEO wins never turn into anything durable.

GEO retrieves passages and synthesises. A system pulls text from multiple sources, weighs them on contextual fit and apparent reliability, and assembles an answer. It doesn't read rank the way a search engine does, which is why a page at position eleven can be cited while a page at position one isn't.

The practical consequence is that GEO rewards dense, self-contained passages a system can lift without needing surrounding context. SEO rewards pages that cover a subject properly. Those aren't in conflict, but they do want different things from the same article.

What the research says works

The term GEO was coined in a 2023 paper from researchers at Princeton, Georgia Tech, IIT Delhi and the Allen Institute for AI, later presented at ACM KDD 2024. It tested content strategies across 10,000 queries, and three findings are worth knowing.

Adding statistics improved visibility by around 41%. Specific numbers get quoted; vague claims don't.

Adding quotations improved it by around 28%. Attributed statements are easier for a system to reproduce with confidence.

Citing external sources improved visibility by up to 115% for pages around position five, while pages already at position one saw little change.

That last finding is the most useful thing in this comparison. GEO work pays off most on pages ranking moderately — the ones that are close but not winning. If you're deciding where to start, that's your answer.

Caveat: tested on a simulated retrieval system in 2023, and today's engines have different architectures. Treat it as direction rather than a guarantee.

What actually changed for buyers

Pew Research Center's analysis of real browsing behaviour is the most reliable picture available, because it tracked actual sessions rather than modelling estimates.

Users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% where none did. Sessions also ended more often: 26% against 16%. And only 1% of visits produced a click on a link inside the summary itself.

Two things follow. Being cited is closer to brand placement than to a traffic channel. And 18% of searches in that study produced a summary at all, so this is a significant shift rather than a total replacement. Classic search still does most of the work.

The dual asset approach

The efficient answer is to stop treating these as separate programmes and make each article serve both.

Research. Pull the queries driving impressions from Search Console, cross-check paid intent in Google Ads, then run the same questions through ChatGPT and Gemini to see what's currently being cited and by whom.

Draft. A 40 to 60 word canonical answer at the top of each section, labelled Q&A blocks, short definitions. Then the long-form context underneath that earns the ranking. The short version feeds retrieval; the full version feeds search.

Entity work. Define the thing in one sentence, state its relationships, and use consistent phrasing for the fact you want cited. Consistency across your own pages matters more here than anywhere in classic SEO, and we go into it in answer engine optimization.

Technical. Sitemaps, structured data, Core Web Vitals as usual. Plus confirm pages render server-side, because most AI crawlers don't execute JavaScript, and check which crawlers you've actually allowed.

Distribute. Publish excerpts on LinkedIn, answer relevant threads, contribute to industry publications. Corroboration across sources is the slow half of GEO and it can't be done on your own domain.

Measure and iterate. GA4 and Search Console alongside manual prompt checks. Most teams run this on a thirty-day cycle.

The trap is judging GEO on sessions. Mentions can rise while sessions fall, because a cited answer often resolves the question. Track them separately or you'll conclude the work isn't landing when it is.

Three misconceptions

That one replaces the other. Neither is winning outright. You need technical health and authority to be visible to any system, generative or not.

That authority stopped mattering. It matters more. Being mentioned on credible third-party sites is a direct input into whether a model treats you as reliable.

That more citations mean more clicks. Often the opposite, because a good summary answers the question. Watch conversion rate on the traffic that does arrive rather than volume alone.

A checklist for an existing page

  2. Record a GA4 baseline for engagement and conversion
  3. Write a 40 to 60 word answer and place it in a labelled block near the top
  4. Add an entity definition paragraph
  5. Apply relevant schema and verify it against the visible page
  6. Publish a short excerpt on LinkedIn or a relevant forum
  7. Run the target questions through ChatGPT and Gemini and record whether you're cited
  8. Re-check in four weeks against the baseline

Start with pages ranking around position five. That's where the research says the gain is largest, and it's also where you have the most to lose from doing nothing.
